Throughout the 1980's The Wedding Present had become a major influence
and focal point of the indie music scene, The Ukranians were another band that grew out of the band
as a mini-project. Guitarist (and our hero) Peter Solowka, decided that one of their sessions
for the BBC's John Peel Show would be recorded in Ukranian (Peter's ancestor's home). Peter's friend 'The
Legendary Len' Joined for the session and played violin and was also a singer for the Ukranians as
he was a student of Slavonic languages. The Ukranians recoreded a session, Then Peel played it repeatedly and it
became one of his favourite sessions which is sometimes wrongly forgotten by some.
Solowka's idea of a bit of a laugh soon turned into something more as peel enjoyed the session so much
that another was recorded for him featuring Ukrainian mandolinist Roman Remeynes.Ukrainski Vistupi V Johna
Peela was the eventual album that came out of the sessions and it sold almost 70,000 copies worldwide even though
the only promotion was an 8day UK tour by the band
